*Mandu is dumplings in Korean food

Do you know what the time difference is between the UK and Korea? It is about 8-9 hours. This will vary due to british standard time, also known as daylight savings time. So when it is 2:00am in the UK, it is nearly 12:00pm in Korea. Which of course means lunch time! Imagine waking up at what feels like midnight and although you are tired and groggy, your stomach is craving the most richest of foods….

This is what I experienced for one week on my return from Korea last year in November. Usually in my daily routine, I need a few cups of coffee, one bowl of cereal and I am ready to face the day. (The coffee gets most of the credit in making me human) But for the week when I was adjusting to the time difference, my stomach was wanting all sorts of things like Sundae gukbap (Korean sausage dish made generally by boiling or steaming cow or pig’s intestines that are stuffed with various ingredients) Jajangmyeon (a noodle dish topped with a thick sauce made of salty black soybean paste, diced pork and vegetables, and sometimes also seafood) but instead I had to make do with cereal and milk! I was not about to fry/ steam/ boil a plate of dumplings so early in the morning! Also I am not fully awake at that time of day and I am sure something would go horribly wrong…

The Mandu cravings soon stopped after a week at 2am, and of course my stomach resumed its normal breakfast cravings. But there is nothing worse that being in a different time zone, and your stomach has a hard time adjusting…‘Is it lunch? Breakfast time?? or tea time? Whatever.. Just feed me!”
